So what is PAT
Testing?
PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing

PAT is vital for checking electrical appliances to ensure safety. It includes visual inspections and electrical tests to prevent shocks and fires. While not always legally required, regular PAT testing shows commitment to safety and helps comply with health regulations. Any organization using portable electrical equipment, like rented properties, offices and nursing homes, should implement PAT testing to reduce electrical risks.

What Does Our PAT Testing Include
1
Visual Inspection
PAT visual inspection checks for obvious electrical safety hazards which includes:

-
Examining the plug for any cracks, burns or other damage,
-
Checking the wiring is correct and safe.
-
Checking the fuse is the correct rating for the appliance.
-
Inspecting the cable for cuts, fraying, and secure connections.
-
Checking the appliance casing for cracks, overheating, and loose parts. Look for unauthorized repairs, blocked vents, and corrosion.
2
Electrical Testing
Electrical PAT testing verifies appliance safety beyond visual checks using a device called a Portable Appliance Tester.

-
For Class I appliances that have an earth cable such as a microwave, earth continuity tests confirm a secure ground connection which would protect the user if the live wire happened to touch the casing of the device.
-
Insulation resistance tests ensure wires are properly insulated, preventing shocks. Class II appliances which are double insulated undergo insulation resistance tests only.
-
A polarity test ensures that the line and neutral wires are wired up correctly on devices such as extension leads or power leads.
3
Appliance Test Log
A PAT test log is a record of each appliance tested, vital for demonstrating electrical safety compliance including:
-
Client's Name & Address
-
Tester's Name
-
Test Date: When the test was performed.
-
Appliance ID: A unique identifier for tracking.
-
Appliance Details: Description, make, model and location.
-
Class Type
-
Test Results: Pass/fail for each electrical test (earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity).
-
Visual Inspection Findings: Notes on any damage or defects along with a Pass/Fail for each device.
